Successful Tech Meet-Up

Successful Tech Meet-Up

The goal of SD83s Career Development priority is that each student will develop the skills and competencies necessary to be successful in a career pathway of their choice. The Tech Meet-Up held at Salmon Arm Secondary, during the morning of April 17, 2024, aligned with this goal by providing an opportunity for students to learn more about the leading edge technology jobs that exist right in our own area.

The event was sponsored by School District 83 Careers and the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society. Shuswap companies showcased to SAS and JL Jackson students how they are on the leading edge of technology in their fields. Students toured the exhibits, learned about the tech jobs available right in the region, and interacted with some of the displays in the school’s atrium. Among the more than 20 local businesses in attendance included Raptor Integration (owned and operated by two SAS grads), Valid Manufacturing, Sky Crew, and Dinoflex. Several post-secondary schools offering technology training also attended.

Students were invited to submit resumes at these companies, as some of them are currently hiring.

The exhibitors in attendance where impressed by the students’ interest, understanding, and attitude. Near the end of the meet-up, as student numbers started to dwindle, the companies had the opportunity to checkout some of the displays.

Below, representatives from the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society, who assisted in hosting the event, had the opportunity to test some of the projects at Shuswap Maker Space.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the seventh annual Tech Meet-Up a success.
