Sexual Orientation Gender Identity (SOGI)

All students have the right to feel safe in our schools. To help ensure our schools are inclusive and safe spaces, we have developed guidelines to support students with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions. SD83 SOGI Guidelines available here.

Everyone has a sexual orientation and gender identity.  SOGI 1 2 3 helps educators make schools inclusive and safe for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities (SOGI). At a SOGI-inclusive school, students’ gender does not limit their interests and opportunities, and their sexual orientation and how they understand and express their gender are welcomed without discrimination.

Being SOGI-inclusive means:
Speaking about SOGI in a way that makes every student feel like they belong
Not limiting a person’s potential based on their biological sex and how they understand or express their gender
Welcoming everyone without discrimination, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity

School District No. 83 SOGI Support Teacher, Amy Witt, has launched a fundraising project selling posters and stickers reinforcing the inclusive nature of our district and the many classrooms within. Amy is inspired by the students she supports and she has learned that marginalized students often require a clear, visual message to truly feel welcome and safe in their learning environments. Senior Leadership Team and the Board of Trustees are very supportive of the fundraiser as it affirms inclusion of all students and families.
A poster and sticker set is $5 and all proceeds to do support SOGI initiatives in our district. Contact Amy at awitt@sd83.bc.ca to order your set.
