Schools placed on hold and secure

Some SD83 schools were placed on hold and secure on Friday.

This week there have been several protests at the SD83 District Education Support Centre (DESC) from those opposed to vaccinations and masking.

“This morning these protesters did something which was completely unacceptable, which was, choosing to enter schools in and around Salmon Arm. Following our “Safe Schools Protocol”, our schools were placed in a “Hold and Secure” to ensure the safety of both staff and students,” explains Superintendent of Schools Donna Kriger.

This means that students were not able to leave and enter the building throughout the remainder of the day. The “hold and secure” was lifted at the end of the day.

Beginning Monday, September 20, (which is an inservice day), outside doors to all schools will remain locked. “We ask that you notify the school office if you require access to the building.”

SD83 will be working with the RCMP to ensure that these protests are kept from all district property. “Please know that the intent of our actions is to maintain environments which are safe for all students and staff. Thank you for your support and understanding,” adds Kriger.
