After several months of raising awareness over a concerning trend, SD83 Transportation Manager Andrea Kathrein is happy to report that the number of red light runners has dropped!
“In September, we were alarmed to see a significant rise in the number of motorists that were driving through our flashing red alternating school bus lights and passing our buses when students are getting on or off the bus. We went from nine in February 2020 to 29 in September 2020,” said Kathrein. “In October, we began a social media safety campaign and were frustrated to see the number of motorists driving through our flashing red alternating school bus lights increase again to 34 violators. In November, we added local radio and newspaper interviews, handed out our school bus safety coffee cup sleeves to our students to take home for their parents/guardians and to local coffee shops. We also sent home notes to parents to encourage them to stop for our flashing red alternating school bus lights. And we got results! For the month of November the number of red-light violations dropped significantly to nine.”
“Thank you so much for your efforts to lower these numbers. It is a real testament to local communities pulling together to keep our students safe. We would like to extend a special thanks to our community RCMP detachments for their invaluable efforts and support.”
