Summer projects

What did you do last summer? Well, if you are part of the SD83 Operations Department, the answer is lots!

Manager of Operations Trevor Bettcher presented information to trustees about some of the projects completed over the summer by SD83 Operations staff.

He noted, as heard many times in 2020, it is a unique year with COVID-19, a number of insurance claims, and some capital projects sprinkled in.

Each year roofing projects are completed. This year the projects were at Highland Park, South Broadview and Jackson.

Over at Eagle River there was a data rewire and phase four of the geothermal project is still in progress. Falkland Elementary had two washrooms renovated and two classrooms renovated (to address enrollment pressure).

At Highland Park the sports field was upgraded, Hillcrest had a gym floor with new lines and floor finish. At North Shuswap the domestic water had to be replaced.

Parkview had the hallway floor replaced, a concrete skim coat in the crawlspace and the roof drain system was upgraded. Meanwhile over at Pleasant Valley the high voltage service was upgraded.

At Sorrento the office flooring was replaced and the interior hallway doors were also replaced.

South Canoe is having its exterior upgraded and at Shuswap Middle two classrooms were renovated (to address enrolment pressures).

Jackson’s music room is being upgraded and the boiler is being replaced.

With COVID-19, SD83 expanded its lead mitigation program (where some water fountains were being replaced with water bottle filling stations) so that each school has at least one water bottle filling station. Custom plexiglass barriers in offices and libraries are also being installed.

SD83 custodial has changed during the pandemic. SD83 has switched to daytime custodial, there is a consistency of shifts and increased hours, as well as enhanced cleaning protocols.

Transportation has also changed with enhanced student safety rules, enhanced cleaning protocols, and seating plans.
