Lisa Rolland was a school trustee in our district who sadly passed away from cancer in 2012. Her wish was to establish a fund to support children’s literacy and the building of children’s home libraries. Her involvement in her children’s education expanded into an interest in the well-being of children in the community and led her to be elected as School Board Trustee for the Sorrento/Carlin area.

Because of Lisa’s deep desire to help all children learn to read, a children’s literacy fund established by fellow trustee Bobbi Johnson and her husband Joe in 2011 with the Shuswap Community Foundation, was renamed in in Lisa’s honour. Each year it has been providing funding to help build the literacy skills of local children. SD83 is very grateful for this legacy project.
Income earned on this fund will be disbursed annually to School District No. 83 (North Okanagan-Shuswap) to support literacy programs for children aged 12 years or under. These programs will either be operated separately by the school district or in conjunction with the Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society, or any successor or like-minded organization, or in conjunction with any private school or agency operating in the Shuswap area.
Donation to the “ Lisa Rolland Children’s Literacy Fund”, which is administered by the Shuswap Community Foundation in support of the school district’s literacy programs are still gratefully accepted.
