Best wishes to the Salmon Arm Secondary Golds this week as the team is in the home stretch to earn a berth to the provincial championships!
The Golds Soccer team finished its season at the top of the AAA Boys’ Thompson Okanagan league and are now in the playoffs with the semi-final game scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 15 (at either 10:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.). If they win they will play in the final, and the berth to the provincials, at 4 p.m. that same day. Because of the snowfall, the remaining games will be played at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops. Originally they were scheduled for this week at Salmon Arm Secondary.
Teacher Sponsor Darcy Calkins explains Salmon Arm finds itself having to play at the most competitive level due to the size of our grade 11 and 12 classes, which often poses a challenge for our small town. This season though the team came together and was able to capitalize on their strengths and be the most frustrating team in the league. The gruelling 10 game league, which consists of four Kelowna teams, one Kamloops team and Salmon Arm, ended for the team on Wednesday, Nov 2. Up until that point, the team had eight wins and one tie. They did lose their final game to finish the league with a record of 8 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss.
With the top position in the league, they earned a bye from the quarter final games (which was to have been played on November 4th but was cancelled due to weather) and get home field advantage for all their playoff games. Unfortunately, weather ended the home field advantage and the remaining games had to be moved to Kamloops.
The team is coached by two grads of the school, Chad Forman and Sam McNie.
