Congratulations to Savannah Lamb, a grade 12 student at Salmon Arm Secondary (Sullivan) who has earned a $40,000 scholarship from the Beedie Luminaries Foundation.
“When I heard I won this scholarship, I was so thrilled. The amount of money I’m being given is something I am beyond grateful for and it will help me so much with my post-secondary education plans,” comments Savannah.
“I have lived with my grandparents for the last five years and I am grateful for all of the hard work they’ve put in to help save money for my education. By winning this scholarship, it provides a lot of relief and assistance for my future plans.”
Sullivan Principal Rob Cadden comments he has been Savannah’s school principal for four years now and is absolutely thrilled for her and her family. “Our community should be proud. Savannah is the ideal recipient for this scholarship, based on the award’s value placed on resiliency and a commitment to post-secondary education.”
Savannah plans to attend Okanagan College in Salmon Arm to take her Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in Psychology. After she finishes the two-year program, she will be transferring to Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Psychology. “I really enjoy helping people and being there for others, which is why I would like to be a school counsellor or a therapist,” she adds.
Beedie Luminaries is a foundation that provides support for students that are facing financial adversity and want to pursue post-secondary education. The scholarships are awarded to students who show resilience, grit, determination, and want to make a change in the lives of others. Additionally, they assign you a mentor, there is student support and Beedie Luminaries support groups, as well as summer paid internship opportunities.
Cadden added that having a mentor and the opportunity for a paid summer internship will also be a benefit for this well deserving and hardworking student.
Self-described as “not your typical scholarship program” Beedie Luminaries is a social-profit enterprise designed to help remove barriers to education and provide wrap-around support for promising students who are facing financial adversity. Students who are smart, but constrained by circumstance. Students who are ready to rise above their circumstances and achieve their dreams.
