Survey open until Thursday

Just a reminder . . . have you had your say? The survey asking SD83 parents and community about two new possible options for the School District No. 83 (North Okanagan-Shuswap) Long Range Facilities Plan (LRFP) is closing soon.

Superintendent of Schools/CEO Peter Jory outlined the two new options at a public consultation meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12 at the District Education Support Centre (DESC).

Both new options were pertinent to the greater Salmon Arm area and its feeder schools. The first option is a hybrid of Option E-4, and was named E-5 in the LRFP. It would see the schools in the greater Salmon Arm area remain at the K-5, K-8, and 6-8 school configurations, with Jackson and Sullivan converting to Grade 9-12 schools.

The second suggestion being consulted on by the Board is the option of building a Grade 8-12 school in the Sorrento area for North Shuswap, Sorrento and Carlin students (Option D-3).

The Board would like to hear from you. A survey opened at 8 p.m. on November 12 and will close at 4 p.m. on November 27. Please click this link to participate in the survey:

At the virtual consultation meeting, Jory showed a series of slides showing enrolment projections for the various options. It also showed that decisions would have to be made as enrolment will soon outpace capacity in certain areas. Educationally, he said, they would like to eliminate at least one school transition for students.

Changes are necessary in the greater Salmon Arm area as student enrolment is outpacing school capacity, particularly in certain areas of the district. Also, having students in a school for just two years does not allow for important relationship building and continuity, explained Jory. He noted he put together a collection of research on school configurations and transitions, which can be found by clicking on this link .
