Parent/student info sessions

Over the next few weeks there will be a series of information sessions for Grade 9/10 students and their parents on the Ministry of Education’s numeracy and/or literacy assessment.

The Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment is a provincial assessment that assesses student proficiency in numeracy. It is a graduation requirement and students take the assessment in their Grade 10 year. The Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment focuses on the application of mathematical concepts learned across multiple subjects from kindergarten to Grade 10. It requires  students to solve problems by using five numeracy processes (different ways of thinking and working): interpret, apply, solve, analyze and communicate.

On January 8th, from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m., there will be a session at Pleasant Valley Secondary School in Armstrong. At PVSS participants will be divided in to two groups and will have an interactive session on the numeracy assessment and the literacy assessment.

Similar to the numeracy assessment, The Grade 10 Literacy Assessment is a provincial assessment that assesses student proficiency in literacy. It is a graduation requirement and students take the assessment in their Grade 10 year. The Grade 10 Literacy Assessment assesses student ability to use critical thinking and analysis to make meaning from a diverse array of texts. It also assesses the ability of students to communicate their ideas. The Grade 10 Literacy Assessment is not based on a particular course, but on learning across multiple subjects, from kindergarten to Grade 10.

On January 9th there will be a numeracy session at Jackson Secondary in Salmon Arm at 6 p.m. in the Jackson Library.

On January 16th there will be a presentation on the numeracy assessment, and a refresher on the literacy assessment, at A.L. Fortune in Enderby, starting at 6 p.m.

On January 30th there will be a slight change of pace as our district numeracy principal Val Edgell heads to Falkland for a parent night where she will introduce parents and their kids to fun math games to play with students in kindergarten through Grade 8.
