Congrats to the Shuswap Middle School (SMS) rugby team which captured the Kelowna Rugby League Sevens Championships last week.
For the past five weeks the Grade 7/8 SMS rugby team has traveled down to Kelowna to play games against Aberdeen Hall Prep School, Canyon Falls Middle School, and Immaculata High School in the Kelowna Rugby Sevens League. The SMS rugby team accumulated a league record of 14 wins, one tie, and two losses.
The league championship was held on Oct. 28 with an all day round robin tournament format topped with a championship game between the top two teams.
SMS took all three round robin games beating Immaculata 26 – 0, Canyon Falls Middle School 38 – 5, and Aberdeen Hall Prep School 36 – 0. They ended up facing Immaculata in the final and from the start put on a dominating performance winning 24 -10.
The winning team was comprised of Shyla Atchison, Gerrit Hickman, Aiden Hickman, Jute Norlin, Carson Paiement, Kai Wilson, Austin Tomlinson, Tyson Allard, Nicholas Metcalfe, Elias Norgren, and Noah Worobey.
Assistant coach and manager Derek Gecse and the team want to give a big thank you to the Yeti rugby club members Geoff Power and Brian Neumann who put in countless hours coaching practices three times per week and on game days. Also to local sponsor Crazy River Clothing Company and to parents who drove to Kelowna every Thursday for games.
He added the great team effort and hard work paid off in a very rewarding season and an amazing first for SMS Rugby in a Rugby Sevens league championship. As the students said after the final “We are the best sevens Rugby team in Kelowna”!
