School District No. 83 is proud to once again participate in the Operation Safe Stop event which took place from October 21-25, 2019.
Operation Safe Stop is a public awareness and enforcement effort to educate the motoring public that passing a stopped school bus, when children are loading or unloading with the RED alternating lights activated, is both dangerous and illegal. It was first started by the New York Governor’s Transportation and Safety Committee and School District No. 60 (Peace River North) brought it across the border into BC in 2016.
SD83 has taken part in this awareness campaign for a number of years and the goal is to reduce the number of red light violations and ultimately to keep our children safe, explains Andrea Kathrein, SD83 transportation manager.
The safety slogan “We Stop, You Stop” is meant to educate the motoring public to slow down when they see one of our school buses activate it’s YELLOW alternating lights in order to prepare to stop for the RED alternating lights and stop signs that extend out the side of our buses.
It is also good to note that the fine for driving past a school bus with it’s RED alternating lights flashing is a $368 fine and three demerit points.
School District No. 83 has been able to equip 18 of its school buses with stop sign cameras that take a great picture of red light violators and their licence plate numbers.
“School District No. 83 is proud to be able to work closely with local RCMP throughout our district and we are very grateful for their incredible support,” adds Kathrein. She noted local coffee shops and gas stations are also showing their support by using SD83’s school bus safety coffee cup sleeves on their coffee cups.
