SD83 is increasing our focus and support in the area of numeracy. In its most recent budget, the Board of Education has supported the implementation of a District Numeracy Team of four educators who will be working with all district schools and school teams to support instruction of numeracy concepts.
The team has developed critical concepts that guide teachers in what the important ‘must know’ concepts are at each grade level. SD83 will also be implementing its own district-wide Math assessment to help identify areas of strength and areas needing support for all our students. Students in kindergarten through grade 9 will write the assessment twice, once in the Fall and then again in the Spring.
The team will also be supporting high school teams and students as students prepare for the new Provincial Numeracy Assessment.
“Frankly we are concerned about how our students are doing in numeracy, and our team will be supporting the important work of classroom teachers across the district to change this trend,” notes Assistant Superintendent Carl Cooper.
To help raise awareness about the importance of numeracy, the Middle School Math Olympics will again be taking place next spring. “There were over 400 participants in last year’s successful event.” (Math Muscles Flexed at Math Olympics)
SD83 will also be offering several parent nights focussing on numeracy in many of our schools, including again some of our geographically outlying schools.
