Students tested their strategies and maneuvers during the grade 3-5 chess tournament at South Broadview on March 13.
A group of 76 students from five elementary schools in SD83 participated. Students from South Broadview, Highland Park, Armstrong Elementary, South Canoe, and Hillcrest have participated in school chess clubs and have had the opportunity to learn skills and practice for the tournament .
Over the course of the tournament day, students took part in a series of games, collecting points for wins and ties.
In the grade 4/5 category, Kalum Kalf of Highland Park Elementary won first place. Second place went to Jacob Holmes of South Canoe, third place went to Justin Weicker of South Broadview Elementary, and Austin Warren also of South Broadview Elementary earned fourth place.
In the grade 3 event, Haydn Mitchell of South Broadview Elementary earned first place, followed by Wade Lightfoot of Highland Park Elementary in second place. Third place went to Nile Dodds of South Broadview Elementary and fourth place was earned by Abriana Duford of South Broadview Elementary.
