Wilderness safety shared

Shuswap Search and Rescue team and local Adventure Smart Trainers led Hillcrest Elementary School students in an Adventure Smart Training Day on Friday Feb 8, 2019 at Hillcrest.

As part of this day, each class participated in a 30-45 minute Adventure Smart presentation in the gym plus 90 minutes of hands on activities outside. The presentation in the gym focussed on teaching our students how to stay safe in the wilderness. The top four strategies are:

  1. Tell an adult where you are going
  2. Hug-a-Tree and stay put
  3. Keep warm and dry
  4. Help searchers by answering their calls

During the hands on activities outside students rotated through five stations that focused on shelter building, knots, first aid, avalanche beacons, stretchers and rescues.

To top it off, at the end of the day each student received a gift bag full of great information to take home to their families and goodies like a whistle and an emergency blanket.

A big thank you to Shuswap Search and Rescue and the Adventure Smart Trainers for sharing their time and knowledge!
